Cat Leashes & Harnesses
Forget the fact that your neighbors might laugh and stare at you in wonder as you walk by. Walking your cat on a leash is a great option if you don't want to allow your cat complete access to the world outside.
This might seem an odd experience for both you and your cat, but it has been tried and conquered. If the training is done at an early enough age, your cat can come to enjoy taking his walks around the neighborhood with you.
Buy a good figure-eight harness and a long nylon leash, at least six feet long or a Flexi extending leash. You can increase the length later, when both of you get comfortable.
Before heading outside, try putting the harness and leash on your cat while still inside your home. Walk your cat around the house, to see if she takes to the concept. Make sure the harness is snug enough, but not completely confining. Expect resistance at first, but after a few tries, she should get somewhat comfortable. It may take several weeks of daily sessions to aclimate your cat to the leash and harness.
Then when you're ready for your first trek outdoors, start off simple. Just bring her out for a few minutes at a time. If your cat tries to bolt because of sudden noises, such as a lawnmower or a backfiring car, she might not be ready to experience the wonders of your neighborhood just yet. But if she startles and then recovers quickly, she should do fine on the leash.
For her first few outings, try taking your cat to a quiet, well-lit place. Then slowly increase her exposure to other places where potential chaos might reign. This way she'll get used to all the parts of your neighborhood and know which places are pleasant and which aren't, should she get loose. Before you know it, you and your cat could be strolling the neighborhood in style, amidst the gawking jealousy of your neighbors.
Be sure to flea comb and/or flea spray your cat prior to returning home. This will help to keep your house flea free. Remember to have current tags on your cat's collar.
