BC SPCA teams up with Bosley’s for a Bunny Bonanza
April 22, 2010
February 25, 2010. For immediate release. The BC SPCA is proud to team up with Bosley’s Pet Food Plus in Delta for a “Bunny Bonanza” to help rabbits from the SPCA Surrey shelter get a second chance for a permanent home. The event is being held between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at the Bosley’s location at 100 – 8047 120th Street in Delta. Potential adopters will be able to interact with the rabbits, and volunteers from the BC SPCA and Bosley’s employees will be on hand to answer questions and process adoptions on site.
The event is being organized in an effort to find homes for the 13 bunnies currently in the shelter, with many more arriving daily. Every year the BC SPCA Surrey shelter cares for more than 130 abandoned and surrendered rabbits. The SPCA’s goal is to find good homes for as many rabbits as possible, by educating potential owners about both the joys and responsibilities of caring for a rabbit. “Rabbits can be very loving and entertaining pets,” says Valerie Sigler, manager of the Surrey shelter. “But they depend on us for their care and they need time every day just like a cat or dog.” She says the abandonment of bunnies is a huge animal welfare issue throughout B.C. “People don’t realize that domestic rabbits cannot fend for themselves and releasing them into the wild is not a humane option.”
While rabbits have specialized needs, they make wonderful pets with the right environment and care. Just like a cat, a rabbit can be litter trained and should be allowed to run freely. They eat pellets, fresh fruit, vegetables, oats or barley for a balanced diet, and should have fresh water every day. Rabbits also need toys to play with and places to hide, dig and chew. They can get bored just like you and need daily stimulation to meet their psychological needs. You should have your rabbit spayed or neutered between the ages of three-and-a-half and six months by a veterinarian specializing in small animals, which will not only prevent surplus bunnies being born, but will also make training easier.
